In our modern age, infertility affects as many as 1 in 6 couples, with up to 50% as a result of male infertility. It can become a worrisome problem requiring treatment for a successful fertilization resulting in pregnancy of your partner.
Though the cause of infertility may be complex, diagnosis of the condition is simple. After a physical exam and complete health history evaluation, we perform a semen analysis, blood tests, and on occasion, scrotal ultrasound.
A low sperm count is often the source of male infertility. Other causes include:
- Failure to produce sperm or an obstruction blocking the ejaculation of sperm
- Variocele, which is an abnormal collection of bulging veins around the testicle
- Infection in testicle, prostate, or bladder
- Anabolic steroids, anti-seizure medicines, or other types of medicine
- Chemotherapy or prior cancer treatment
- Undescended testicle
- Genetic abnormalities
- Hormone problems
- Oftentimes, no cause is identified
To correct male infertility, we offer advanced treatments based on the root cause, which may include medications or surgery to resolve hormone imbalances, remove sperm transport obstructions, or surgically repair varicoceles.
For men with no sperm in their ejaculate (azoospermia), Chicago urologist Dr. Laurence Levine collects sperm using TESA (testicular sperm aspiration). He was the first physician in the United States to use this minimally invasive sperm retrieval procedure.
As a skilled expert in this newer technique, Dr. Levine has since performed over 1,000 successful surgeries and trained many other urologists on the procedure as a professor of urology at Rush University in Chicago.
Dr. Levine also performs vasectomy reversal with a surgical microscope and varicocele ligation using a microscope or laparoscopic techniques.
